I'm quite excited and honored to be featured as the dissenting voice in this piece! However, I just want to clarify, I wasn't thinking about The NME when I made my comments. I was thinking more along the lines of Mojo or The Word. However, since NME publishes on a weekly basis, I think the fact that it's not always factually or grammatically correct can be given some leeway.

Also, Rolling Stone's articles are pretty in-depth, but, apart from Magnet and Filter--two mags which hardly ever come out--the US music press is really lacking in quality journalism. Spin used to be good, but that was many moons ago.

Anyway, this was a clever and thoroughly interesting read!

Fantastic piece - I guess I over-romanticize the days when Rolling Stone was, at least to me, more than just a source of much hype. The role of "hyper" is one that journalists play all the time, often willingly - especially in sports.

It creates a mindset similar to the "blockbuster" effect in movies - nothing in between. Big bands and indie bands, but nothing in between.

I hope you'll fold in the comments from journalists, if they get back to you.

As I said to you last week, it's been a true pleasure reading your blog; I think you could easily make this a money-making concern if you wanted to. You're an extremely talented writer - and I'm sure I'll see you in Rolling Stone someday - I hope as its editor in chief wanting to recapture the halcyon days.

20 points and an A+ in the class. Take care and stay in touch.

I completely agree with you about Scarlett -- in both acting and music abilities-- and about actors-turned-singers in general. Have you seen her recent music video feat. David Bowie? Lost In Translation was okay in its first run, but this redo version is ridiculous. Let it go Scarlett, you can't squeeze water (i.e. success) from a stone (i.e. your most noteworthy role).

I love how you mentioned this today...because just this morning I went to grab something out of my sister's room and lo and behold I caught this issue of Rolling Stone on her dresser.

My first thought (before even realizing who was on the cover) was somewhere between "Um, way to snag my copy of Rolling Stone before I even got a chance to see it!" and "Uh, why is my sister reading Rolling Stone?" But then when I did indeed realize who was on the cover I was like "Oh. OK, well uh...I'll just leave this here, then" and I backed slowly out of her room, haha.

I don't know WHY I get Rolling Stone anymore. It just magically appeared one day and keeps coming...but I'll be damned if I throw any of them away. Someday when I go on a crafty rampage, I'll have plenty of collaging material!

First off, let me preface by saying that I'm a male, and I am not afraid to admit it when I like something that would be embarrassing to me.

With that being said, we all have 'guilty pleasure' music. Everyone admits they like the Zeppelins and Killers of the world because they are good and they don't compromise our manhood, but we all like various kinds of music that we normally wouldn't admit. For example, I love 80s pop, 50s rock-and-roll., and modern "pussy rock". I've heard that last term to describe groups like Postal Service and Styx who make songs that are pretty emasculating.

I can't say I like any boy bands, but I do know a few that do (a couple of which are straight), but if you play Peter Schilling's Major Tom, I'll be in heaven.

Well, there's no praise like praise from the folks you used as sources, and I can do nothing but echo them: this is a fantastic piece. I have but one quibble: paragraph length. Actually, two: the piece could use a couple of subheads, liberally placed to guide the reader among the many themes.

Back to point one: I'd split the lead just before the word "Sandwiched." Again, think pace - remember the reader is in for about 4-6 lines per graph. This may be different with regular blog consumers, but think too about newbies like me.

Super, super job - I couldn't help but think about my own guilty pleasures. Did I mention I have two Partridge Family CD's in my car? And Gary Puckett and the Union Gap's big hits on my iPod?

It was great! I sound like an "industry insider." Regarding the paucity of guys though - maybe the idea of a guilty pleasure is more prominent among women? If someone has the Backstreet Boys on their ipod as a guilty pleasure 99% of the time it's a girl. I'd be interested to hear what a guy considers a guilty pleasure, or even if they believe in that idea at all.
